In this symbolic year 2015, on the occasion of the one hundredth commemoration of the

Armenian Genocide, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia has dedicated its

pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia to the artists of the

Armenian diaspora. It will be located at the Mekhitarist Monastery on the island of San

Lazzaro degli Armeni. Vaporetti will leave for San Lazzaro every early afternoon from the

Giardini.

 

The curatorial concept of Armenity** implies the notion of displacement and territory, justice

and reconciliation, ethos and resilience. Regardless of their place of birth, the selected artists

carry within their identity the memory of their origins. Through their talent and willpower, these

grandchildren of survivors of the Armenian Genocide—the first genocide of the 20th Century—

rebuilt a “transnational assembly” from the remnants of a shattered identit y. Their ingrained

concern for memory, justice and reconciliation skillfully transcends notions of territory,

borders and geography. Whether they were born in Beirut, Lyon, Los Angeles, or Cairo and

wherever they may reside, these global citizens constantly question and reinvent their armenity.

 

Armenity** is being held in a setting of special significance for the Armenian diaspora. It was

on the Island of San Lazzaro, located between San Marco and the Lido and facing the Giardini

of the Biennale, that in 1717 the Armenian monk Mekhitar established the Mekhitarist Order. It

was here that in the early 19th century Lord Byron studied the Armenian language. Many

important works of European literature and religious texts were first translated into Armenian on

this scenic island. Over its three-hundred years history the Monastery of San Lazzaro with its

gardens, former print shop, cloisters, museum and library, has helped to preserve Armenia’s

unique cultural heritage, much of which might otherwise have been lost.

 

An accompanying catalogue published by Skira, Milan will contain colour reproductions and

texts in English and Armenian. An introduction, forewords and curatorial texts will be followed

by 4 pages dedicated to each of the 16 artists: 1 page of text by each artist and essays by

international art critics and writers such as Ruben Arevshatyan, Cecile Bourne, Ginevra Bria,

Adam Budak, David Kazanjian, Berthold

Reiss, Gabi Scardi, Hrag Vartanian and 3 pages

with images and drawings of the works.

The third part of the catalogue will contain essays by New York-based art historian and

independent curator Neery Melkonian and London-based art writer and Ibraaz editor

Stephanie Bailey. The catalogue will end with the Armenian translations of the texts.

 

A book of poetry comprising the work of 12 Armenian poets born after the Armenian Genocide

and the Russian Revolution will accompany the catalogue. The poems have been translated

into French by the prominent Swiss-Armenian poet Vahé Godel. The book will include an essay

by the author, along with a selection of Armenian translations.

 

In the context of Armenity, the Piccolo Amphitheater of the Arsenale will host from

September 5 to 11 a series of performances, discussions and video projections by performing

artists, poets and independent filmmakers orginally from Asia Minor.

* Adelina Cüberyan v. Fürstenberg, a Swiss citizen of Armenian origin, is a renowned international

curator. A pioneer in the field, she is known for broadening contemporary art to include a multicultural

approach. She is the founder and first Director of the Centre d’Art Contemporain de Genève and the

former Director of MAGASIN--Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Grenoble. In 1996 she founded ART

for The World, an NGO working with contemporary art, independent cinema and human rights.

** Armenity derives from the French word Arménité, a notion which expresses the particular

characteristics of the grandchildren of Armenian Genocide survivors. These include a state of constant

flux, a diversity of self-definition, and a modern and often subjective sense of being-in-the-world.

In quest’anno simbolico, 2015, il Ministero della Cultura della Repubblica dell’Armenia

dedica il suo Padiglione partecipante alla 56. Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte della Biennale

di Venezia agli artisti della diaspora armena, collocato per l’occasione al Monastero

Mekhitarista dell’Isola di San Lazzaro degli Armeni e servito da vaporetti pomeridiani con

partenza dai Giardini.

 

Il concetto curatoriale di Armenity*, rafforza la nozione di dislocamento e di territorio, di

giustizia e di riconciliazione, di ethos e di resilienza cosi, indipendentemente dal loro luogo

di nascita, ciascuno degli artisti parte di questo progetto porta con sé la memoria,

l'identità e la verità delle sue origini. Un’adunata "transnazionale" sotto l’insegna di

un’identità frammentata e dispersa, ricostruita e rinnovata con il talento di questi artisti, nipoti

di coloro che sono sfuggiti al Genocidio Armeno nel 1915, il primo del XX secolo. Il loro

radicato interesse nei confronti dell’identità e della memoria si sovrappone

sapientemente alle nozioni di territorio, confine e geografia. Che siano nati a Beirut,

Lione, Los Angeles o al Cairo e ovunque essi vivano, questi cittadini globali mettono

costantemente in discussione e reinventano la loro armenità.

 

Armenity * si terrà sull’Isola di San Lazzaro degli Armeni, situata tra San Marco e il Lido, di

fronte ai Giardini della Biennale. L’isola è il luogo dove il monaco armeno Mekhitar nel 1717

stabilì la sede della Congregazione Mechitarista e dove, in seguito, Lord Byron studiò la

lingua armena. L’emblematico monastero di San Lazzaro, con i suoi giardini, l’antica

tipografia, il chiostro e la preziosa biblioteca di manoscritti, ha contribuito a preservare uno dei

patrimoni più importanti della cultura armena, gran parte del quale altrimenti sarebbe andato

perduto.

 

Il catalogo pubblicato da Skira, Milano presenterà riproduzioni a colori e testi in inglese e

armeno. Prefazioni, introduzione e testo curatoriale saranno seguiti da pagine dedicate a

ciascuno degli artisti, con testi degli artisti stessi, o saggi di critici d’arte e autori (Ruben

Arevshatyan, Cecile Bourne, Ginevra Bria, Adam Budak, David Kazanjian, Berthold

Reiss, Gabi Scardi, Hrag Vartanian) e altre pagine con le immagini, disegni e collages delle

opere. La terza parte del catalogo conterrà saggi della storica d’arte e curatrice indipendente

con base a New York, Neery Melkonian, e di Stephanie Bailey, scrittrice d’arte e editor di

Ibraaz di Londra. In calce al volume vi sarà una sezione contenente le traduzioni in armeno di

tutti i testi.

 

Oltre al catalogo, sarà pubblicato un libro di poesie composto di una selezione di poemi di 12

poeti armeni nati dopo il genocidio armeno e la rivoluzione russa e tradotto in francese dal

poeta svizzero-armeno Vahé Godel. Il libro comprenderà un saggio dell'autore e una

selezione di traduzioni armene delle poesie.

 

Nel contesto di Armenity, verrano presentati all’Anfiteatro dell’Arsenale dal 5 all’11

settembre una serie di performance, dibattiti e video proiezioni di artisti, poeti e registi

indipendenti originari dell’Asia Minore.

di fama internazionale, esperta nel campo dell'arte contemporanea e nota come una pioniere

dell’approfondimento dell’approccio multiculturale dell’arte contemporanea. Fondatrice e prima

direttrice del Centre d'Art Contemporain di Ginevra, ex direttrice del MAGASIN - Centro

Nazionale di Arte Contemporanea di Grenoble, è attualmente direttrice di ART for The World,

una ONG con sede a Ginevra e a Torino, che si occupa di arte contemporanea, cinema e

diritti umani.

En cette année symbolique de 2015, le Ministère de la Culture de la République

d'Arménie consacre son pavillon participant à la 56e Exposition Internationale d’Art de la

Biennale di Venezia aux artistes de la diaspora arménienne, situé pour l'occasion au

monastère Mekhitariste sur l'île de San Lazzaro degli Armeni et servi par vaporetto dès

13h30 l'après-midi avec un départ depuis les Giardini.

 

Armenity renforce le concept de déplacement et territoire, de justice et réconciliation,

de ethos et de résilience. Ainsi, indépendamment de leur lieu de naissance, les artistes

sélectionnés de la diaspora arménienne, expriment la mémoire et l'identité de leurs

origines. Un ensemble «transnational» sous la bannière d'une identité morcelée,

reconstruite avec talent par ces artistes, petits-enfants de ces survivants du Génocide

arménien, le premier du 20e siècle. Leur préoccupation enracinée de l'identité, de la

mémoire, de la justice et de la réconciliation, chevauche habilement les notions de

territoire, de frontière et de géographie. Qu'ils soient nés à Beyrouth, Lyon, Los

Angeles, ou au Caire, où qu'ils vivent, ces citoyens du monde remettent constamment en

question et réinventent leur armenité.

 

Armenity* aura lieu sur l'île de San Lazzaro située entre San Marco et Lido, juste en

face des Giardini de la Biennale, où le moine arménien Mekhitar en 1717 leva le siège de

l'Ordre Mekhitarian et où Lord Byron étudia la langue arménienne. L’emblématique

monastère de San Lazzaro avec ses jardins, l'ancien atelier d'impression, le cloître, le

musée et la précieuse bibliothèque de manuscrits a contribué à préserver l'un des biens

les plus importants de la culture arménienne, qui autrement aurait été en grande partie

perdu.

 

Le catalogue publié par Skira, Milan, comprendra des reproductions en couleur et des

textes en anglais et en arménien. Avant-propos, introduction et textes curatoriaux, seront

suivis par des pages dédiées à chacun des artistes: avec des textes écrits par les artistes

eux-mêmes, ou des essais par des critiques et écrivains d'art internationaux (Ruben

Arevshatyan, Cecile Bourne, Ginevra Bria, Adam Budak, David Kazanjian, Berthold

Reiss, Gabi Scardi, Hrag Vartanian) suivis de trois pages avec des images, des dessins

et des collages des oeuvres. La troisième partie du catalogue comprendra des textes de

l'historienne d'art et commissaire indépendante Neery Melkonian, qui vit à New York, et

de Stephanie Bailey, écrivain d’art et éditeur de Ibraaz, basée à Londres. Le catalogue

se terminera avec les traductions des textes en arménien.

 

Parallèlement, sera publié un livre de poèmes, composé par une sélection de poèmes

de 12 poètes arméniens, nés après le génocide arménien et la Révolution russe et traduit

en français par l’éminent poète suisse-arménien Vahé Godel. Il comprendra un essai de

l'auteur et une sélection de traductions des poèmes arméniens.

 

Dans le cadre d’Armenity, l’Amphithéatre de l’Arsenale accueillera du 5 à l’11

septembre une série de performances, de débats et de vidéo projections d’artistes,

poètes et réalisateurs indépendants originaires d’Asie Mineure.

internationale et l'une des pionnières du champ de l'élargissement de l'art contemporain

par son approche multiculturelle. Fondatrice et ancienne Directrice du Centre d'Art

Contemporain de Genève, ancienne Directrice du MAGASIN - Centre National d'Art

Contemporain de Grenoble, elle est actuellement la Fondatrice et la Directrice de ART for
